The core dynamic between the feuding Batman and Robin is the highlight of the movie, as you’d expect.

Speaking of violence, this DC movie gets it just right where others have failed - when something bloody happens, it’s to show dire consequences for a decision or to up the stakes in a realistic way. The aforementioned Batman fight is truly spectacular and appropriately violent (although it is sad that the title fight is unmemorable and a bit awkward).

The final assault on Wayne Manor is glorious, fist-pumping fun, plus it’s always great to see Nightwing kicking butt in acrobatic fashion. There’s a chilling opening scene that will cause you to never look at Dollmaker the same way again. DC is a universe that has amazing characters like Wonder Woman, Lois Lane, and Batgirl, so it’s a shame the treatment of women in the movie is handled so poorly. And the only other woman of note almost gets sexually assaulted in an alley. The one supporting female is used for nothing more than her sexual allure and has no substance to her character, despite her integral role. Making matters worse, there are no major female characters to speak of. The movie attempts to utilize a version of Damian that the comics spent years building to, but without all that backstory, it becomes an empty moment in the movie. The same goes for all the hard work Morrison and his artistic collaborators did to make Damian an invaluable member of the Bat-family. Those who have read the comic already know the Owls are a force not to be taken lightly, one that is as secret as it is deadly, but the movie never gets to why they’re a threat so great that Batman’s world gets upended when they make their presence known. They do have a small army of undead assassins, which is nothing to scoff at, but a weird plot device keeps them from feeling like much of a threat, either.

Apparently being the 1% is bad enough as it is. but the Owls don’t do much other than sit around in formal wear.

Batman’s villains always come with a schtick - Poison Ivy wants to overrun the city with plants, Joker wants to pump it full of lethal laughing gas, etc. The Court of the Owls never instill a menace to their mystique, so you’re never sure exactly what their threat to Gotham is. Events unfurl in rapid succession in order set up a final confrontation that doesn’t feel earned or even a natural extension of where the story was headed. Characters make extreme decisions for lame reasons or just no reason at all. We’ll avoid spoilers, but suffice to say that after a particular twist involving Robin and Talon, the logic of the movie flies the coop. Even when the plot takes a turn for the worse in the second half, their personal conflict still remains a highlight, voiced admirably by Jason O'Mara as Batman and Stuart Allan as Robin.Ībout that second half, let’s get to what went so wrong.

There’s a palpable tension between Batman and Robin, and it’s their emotional back-and-forth that forms the core of the movie. When Talon, a ninja assassin of the Court of Owls, offers Robin the acceptance and freedom that he craves, he succeeds in setting the two on a collision course. The movie starts with Batman and Robin bickering at each other like only father and son can. Robin has a lot to live up to is putting it mildly. What potential is that, you say? This movie is a mix of Grant Morrison’s Batman and Robin stories and Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Court of the Owls arc - two of the best entries in Batman’s comic library. It’s a solid premise that starts out with some excellent moments, including the best Batman fight scene in recent memory, but at the halfway point it loses its way, resulting in an animated movie that doesn’t fulfill it’s awesome potential. As part of their move to take out Batman, they set their sights on Robin, Batman’s son Damian Wayne, driving a rift between the dynamic duo. The story involves the villainous bourgeoisie known as the Court of Owls, who want to run Gotham City while wearing creepy masks. Robin - it’s clear that while Batman may be good at a great many things, father-son bonding is not among them. The followup to last year’s Son of Batman has come, and from the looks of the title - Batman vs.
