In your first base build 4 training centers ASAP! This is where the troops you hire for your second team and beyond will be gaining free SP up until they max out at level 7 or close to it.

In the first 3 weeks to a month of the game you can get away with only one lab, two max. You will outpace yourself, the enemy will be better armed because you unlocked weapons for them that you don't have the resources to mass produce yourself. Ignore any advice that tells you build 9-10. I beat the game last playthrough with only 4 research labs. The faster you research, the bigger hole you dig for yourself because the Pandoran evolution is based on the player's research. The best and most useful tip I got from Gorffo is research in this game is a trap. The Phoenix Point Wiki is extremely useful. That knowledge hurts you more than helps you in Phoenix Point. Throw everything you learned from the latest XCom games out the door. Go to Google and search "Phoenix Point Year One Edition tips Reddit" I learned a lot from this. Here are some of my tips and his tips mixed in. Some of the best advice I got here before I finished the game was from a user named Gorffo. It just feels like an early beta. This game has a really steep learning curve. The aim and will systems are unique and worth exploring. The weapons and hero classes are interesting and once you have a fully trained up squad some of the early issues aren't as bad. There's a lot to do on the strategic layer.

The destructable environment is somehow worse than UFO defense. The lair and nest missions are frequent, unrewarding and monotonous. Inventory management is even more of a chore than Xcom. There are tons of other little things as well. Lots of times I've blown myself up due to an unrendered archway or some random branch when the game says I have a good shot. Also things like trajectories for grenades and rockets are really iffy. I've moved into plenty of positions where the game says I have a shot but it turns out I can only see a tiny sliver of thier big toe. Is that an assault rifle or a shot gun it's holding? Is it going to go invisible if I shoot it or fire back in my face? Is that a claw or a grenade launcher and what type of grenade launcher?Īlso the free aim system makes it really hard to tell how much cover a unit is in. In PP you need to carefully read each enemy's description before engaging because they don't stand out. In Xcom each enemy has a unique design and it's easy to recognize and plan around. Trying to get in close is generally suicide. This, combined with the need to disable limbs and the terrible aim of most rifles and heavy weapons, makes snipers the optimal strategy for a lot of the early game. The armor system also really favors big hits as many small hits just get eaten up by armor. Sometimes you can get a bunch right on top of your deploy point which can easily wipe an early squad. Enemy spawns are random and they will basically all b-line and swarm you as soon as they see you. In PP stealth snipers can kill a guy from across the map the first turn or a berserker run in from a different room and one shot you without you being able to react. Sometimes you will get bad pods and fail a mission but usually you don't get mauled out of nowhere. On the balance front Xcom is generally a 'fair' game. I think places where PP really falls flat is the balance and the readability. If you are a big fan of the original 1990s UFO defense then PP is definitely worth a shot. Not to the point of being unplayable but it can be really frustrating. I picked up PP on sale and I think its interesting but really deeply flawed.
